SENATOR SMITH: And you were on deck at that time?
MR. BOXHALL: On the deck, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: Approaching the bridge?
MR. BOXHALL: Just approaching the bridge.
SENATOR SMITH: Could you see what had occurred?
MR. BOXHALL: No, sir; I could not see what had occurred.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you know what had occurred?
MR. BOXHALL: No, not at all. I heard the sixth officer say what it was.
SENATOR SMITH: What did he say that it was?
MR. BOXHALL: He said we had struck an iceberg.
SENATOR SMITH: Was there any evidence of ice on any of the decks, to your knowledge, after that collision?
MR. BOXHALL: Just a little on the lower deck. On the open deck I saw just a little, not much.
SENATOR SMITH: Do you know whether anyone was injured by that impact?
MR. BOXHALL: No, I do not know; I never heard.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you continue to go toward the bridge after the impact?
MR. BOXHALL: Yes, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: How far did you go?
MR. BOXHALL: At the time of the impact I was just coming along the deck and almost abreast of the captain's quarters, and I heard the report of three bells.
SENATOR SMITH: What kind of a report? Describe it.
MR. BOXHALL: The lookout's report.
SENATOR SMITH: What was said?
MR. BOXHALL: Three bells were struck.
SENATOR SMITH: Three bells?
MR. BOXHALL: That signifies something has been seen ahead. Almost at the same time I heard the first officer give the order "Hard astarboard," and the engine telegraph rang.
SENATOR SMITH: What did the order mean?
MR. BOXHALL: Ordering the ship's head to port.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see this iceberg at that time?
MR. BOXHALL: Not at that time.
SENATOR SMITH: Did it extend above the deck that you were on?
MR. BOXHALL: Oh, no, sir; it did not extend there.
SENATOR SMITH: A little lower?

M. BOXHALL : Il a dit que nous avions heurté un iceberg.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : À votre connaissance, y avait-il des traces de glace sur les ponts après cette collision?
M. BOXHALL : Juste un peu sur le pont inférieur. Sur le pont ouvert, j’en ai vu juste un peu, pas beaucoup.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Savez-vous si quelqu’un a été blessé par cet impact?
M. BOXHALL : Non, je ne le sais pas; je n’en ai jamais entendu parler.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous continué à vous diriger vers la passerelle après l’impact?
M. BOXHALL : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Jusqu’où êtes-vous allé?
M. BOXHALL : Au moment de l’impact, j’arrivais sur le pont et j’étais presque à la hauteur des quartiers du capitaine, et j’ai entendu le tintement de trois cloches.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Quel genre de tintement? Décrivez-le.
M. BOXHALL : Le signal de la vigie.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’est-ce qui a été dit?
M. BOXHALL : Trois sons de cloches.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Trois cloches?
M. BOXHALL : Cela signifie que quelque chose a été vu. Presque au même moment, j’ai entendu le copilote donner l’ordre « A tribord toute », et le télégraphe a sonné.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’est-ce que cela voulait dire?
M. BOXHALL : D’ordonner au navire de virer à bâbord.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu cet iceberg à ce moment-là?
M. BOXHALL : Pas à ce moment-là.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-ce que cela s’est étendu au-dessus du pont où vous étiez?
M. BOXHALL : Oh, non, monsieur; il ne s’est pas étendu jusque-là.
